What Happens When the Other Driver Doesn’t Have Enough Coverage?

By Shane Lipson, MD, Certified Insurance Counselor | March 19, 2026

When another driver causes an accident, the funds available to cover damages come from only two places:

  1. Their insurance policy limits
  2. Their personal assets

If those limits are low or nonexistent that gap doesn’t magically disappear. Without Uninsured Motorists/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, you may be responsible for costs tied to vehicle damage, medical bills, lost wages, and recovery expenses, even though you did nothing wrong.

UM/UIM is additional liability coverage for the other driver.  Although it might seem paradoxical to buy coverage for other drivers, it’s important coverage and the alternative is worse.  Without that coverage, when the other driver’s limits are hit, there are no more funds available to pay for your injuries, lost wages, and other damages.

In today’s market, the minimum required coverage that States require of drivers may not even cover the cost of a newer vehicle, let alone medical care or extended time away from work.

This Isn’t Just a Personal Auto Issue

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage is just as critical for business owners.

Any time a vehicle is being used for business purposes, whether it’s a company vehicle or an employee driving on behalf of the business, exposure exists. If one of your drivers is involved in an accident caused by another party with insufficient limits, UM/UIM coverage can be the difference between continuity and unexpected financial loss.

This is why we discuss UM/UIM coverage not only with personal lines clients, but also with commercial auto and business policyholders. The risk doesn’t change just because the vehicle is tied to a business…in fact, the financial impact can be even greater.

Protection You Control, Regardless of Others’ Choices

You can’t control whether another driver carries adequate insurance.

What you can control is whether your own policy is structured to protect you when others fall short.

UM/UIM coverage exists specifically to step in when the at-fault party’s coverage is insufficient. It’s one of those protections that often goes unnoticed until it becomes essential.

At Mt. Franklin Insurance, our role is to help clients understand these nuances and ensure their coverage aligns with the realities of today’s risk environment.  A quick review of your policy can confirm whether UM/UIM, along with other important protections, is properly included and structured for your situation.

Because ultimately, insurance isn’t just about meeting requirements.
It’s about making sure you’re protected when the unexpected happens…regardless of what someone else chose to purchase.
